đź’« Overview
You replace the employee, and the next person struggles in exactly the same place. You offer the discount, and the sales problem returns. Meanwhile, your team still needs you to approve everything. Honestly, how many times are you supposed to fix the same week?
In Episode 56 of QueenMode, I explain how I separate the problem demanding attention from the condition that may be creating it. I use Stephen R. Covey’s Time Management Matrix to look at recurring fires, connect the evidence, and choose one strategic constraint to address over the next 90 days. My goal is to help you give your attention to the work that can change the pattern.
Three Things I Want You to Take Away
- I’ll help you distinguish a real crisis from a request that’s simply loud. I’m not asking you to ignore harm, a serious cash problem, or a deadline with real consequences. I want you to recognize what happens when someone else’s demand for an immediate answer starts selecting your business priorities. Through Covey’s matrix, I show you why important work such as training, preparation, and clarifying decisions can keep losing to interruptions—and how that neglected work can eventually become tomorrow’s emergency. I also make room for something owners often forget: meaningful rest supports your ability to lead. It belongs among the things that matter.
- I’ll show you how to connect recurring fires to a possible parent issue. I walk you through a one-page review of the last 30–90 days: the facts, the patterns, and what was missing before each problem became urgent. I use examples involving turnover, repeat mistakes, weak sales, and a creative agency whose revisions and missed deadlines may trace back to unclear scope. I want you to examine the explanation before buying the solution. A new employee may be the right choice, but I want you to check whether the last person struggled with the same missing training. A discount may produce a quick yes, but I want you to understand where qualified prospects are actually dropping out. I treat the explanation as a hypothesis we can test.
- I’ll help you choose one 90-day priority with evidence of progress. I use three criteria: leverage, evidence, and influence. I want you to choose something that could improve several recurring problems, has facts behind it, and falls within your business’s ability to act. From there, I explain how to establish a baseline, choose early signals and a result signal, and review what’s changing at 30, 60, and 90 days. I also separate containment from diagnosis: after stabilizing a real emergency, I want you to give the investigation a place on your calendar. If 90 minutes of protected strategic time feels impossible, I suggest beginning with 45. I care most that routine questions can’t casually take it back.
Resources/Mention
I first read Stephen R. Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People when I was 23, and I’ve returned to it multiple times. In this episode, I apply Habit 3, “Put First Things First,” to business strategy: FranklinCovey’s official overview of Habit 3 and the four quadrants.
