The question is not whether you love your business. You almost certainly do. It’s more about whether that love has become one-sided.
Is the business paying you consistently, or are you still accepting whatever remains? Is reinvestment tied to a clear objective, or has it become your automatic answer? Are you deliberately building something outside the company that does not depend on your next working hour? If the business grew another twenty percent next year, would your life become meaningfully better—or would the business simply develop a larger appetite?
Those are not selfish questions. They are ownership questions.
The answer is not to starve the business, pull out money it genuinely needs, or make financial decisions from an article on the internet. Exact decisions belong in a real plan built with the appropriate financial and tax professionals. But before anyone can help you with the numbers, you have to make a leadership decision: you will no longer treat your own well-being as an optional expense.
Your business deserves thoughtful stewardship. So do you.
A healthy business should create reciprocity. It receives your talent and leadership, and over time it should return something real: stability, margin, possibility, and a life that is not perpetually waiting for the business to need less.
I eventually rebuilt my practice and sold it for eight figures. But the most important transformation was not the number attached to the exit. It was learning that ownership was never supposed to mean abandoning myself for the sake of the thing I owned.
The goal is not to extract everything you can from the business. It is to stop building a business that only knows how to take from you.
A business-by-design does not treat the founder as fuel. It includes her in the design.
You did not build your business so you could spend your life feeding it. You built it to help carry the life you wanted to live.
