Everybody is walking around terrified that AI is going to replace their team. I’m not worried about that at all. I’m worried about something quieter that is already happening: AI is not going to replace your people — it is going to reveal your leadership. Every gap, every shortcut, every standard you never wrote down, every time you said “just ask me” instead of building something that could answer the question without you.

The Problem

The promise is seductive, and I want you to see the hook in it. AI is the employee you never have to hire. It doesn’t call out, doesn’t get moody, doesn’t need a raise or a review or a conversation about how somebody spoke to somebody else in the break room. For a woman who has been the glue, the engine and the customer service desk of her own business, that doesn’t sound convenient. It sounds like rescue.

So she buys the subscription and watches the tutorials at eleven at night, because of course that’s when there’s time. There’s a little magic — a caption written faster, an email drafted, real time saved. And then nothing much changes. The plate is just as full. The seven hundred things are still seven hundred things. She has a shiny new tool and she is still the bottleneck of her entire company.

And she concludes that AI is overhyped, or that it doesn’t work for her industry, or that she isn’t technical enough. None of that is true. What’s actually happening is more uncomfortable and far more useful.

The QueenMode Perspective

Here is the whole episode in one sentence: AI amplifies whatever design already exists. It doesn’t create order, impose structure, or decide what matters. It takes what is already there and makes more of it, faster. Clarity in, leverage out. Chaos in, faster chaos — which is worse than regular chaos, because now the chaos has volume and confidence and perfect grammar.

Think of a microphone. It will carry a voice to ten thousand people, and it has no opinion whatsoever about whether you have anything to say. If you do, it makes you powerful. If you don’t, it makes you loudly empty, and now everyone can hear it.

So before you open a tool, do the leadership work almost nobody does. Make two lists. Front stage: the work where you are unmistakably brilliant — your judgment, your relationships, your handskills, your decade of pattern recognition, the reason clients chose you over the person down the street. Backstage: the prep, the admin, the reformatting, the chasing, the copying of a number from one system into another. In my line of work, backstage was turning on the pano machine, turning on the compressor, posting on social media, submitting an insurance claim.

Then look at your week and tell me the ratio. Because the tragedy isn’t the busy work. The tragedy is all the brilliant work that never got done because of the busy work.

The next gap stings: you cannot prompt what you never defined. For years I was the only person who could look at a Meta ad for my practice and know instantly whether it was right. I was proud of that. Then I handed marketing to a coordinator, told her “no, not like that,” and she reasonably asked how she should do it next time — and nothing useful came out of my mouth. I had an MBA with a digital marketing specialization and I gave her a vibe, not a standard. So I said “just bring them all to me and I’ll check them,” which felt like mentorship and was actually me locking the quality standard of my practice in a room only I had a key to. Then I wondered why I couldn’t take a Friday.

The day I wrote it down — hex codes, fonts, what kind of photos, what language we never use — was the day those ads could get made without me hovering. That’s the difference between having a skill and having a business.

And then defend the no-go zones. AI creates efficiency; it does not create empathy and cannot be made to care. Relationships, judgment calls, physical presence, the ideas that come from a life actually lived — those aren’t overhead to optimize away. Knowing which twelve minutes of your week are holy is a strategic act, because everyone is about to have the same tools and efficiency is about to stop being a differentiator entirely.
